Gender Representation

In the primeval clip gender is represented in several different ways.
Firstly, the character Abby is seen operating a digger which straight away suggests she is not a stereotypical female. We see her swing the digger round and hit the sabre tooth cat with it. Her operating the digger and when she is seen holding a gun slightly suggests she is more brave and stronger than the stereotypical female.
The male character dressed in pink is not also not what you would expect from a stereotypical man. The first reason for this is that he is dressed in mainly pink clothes, a pink scarf and a hat. During the conforntation with the man in the barn he doesnt have a gun so he picks up a shovel near him. Also when he is given a gun to hold near the end of the clip he seems quite happy and chuffed that he is holding a gun.
The woman who goes to the barn and is threatened by the man is probably a stereotypical female. She is dressed in very smart clothes including a black dress and a long white coat. This suggests she takes car with her looks and image like most females are stereotypically seen to be. When she is held at gunpoint she is powerless to do anything and falls to the ground horrified. She is then saved however by her friends and says that she is annoyed because she fell on her brand new coat. Again this suggests she is very image aware and cares for her looks as after nearly being shot she is only worried about her coat.

Web 1.0, 2.0, 3.0

Web 1.0 - Is a fairly old Internet that only allows people to read from the Internet. For example people who go on a web 1.0 website can only see and read what is on it and can not edit or contribute to it. Web 1.0 also allowed the use for simple hyperlinks between websites.

Web 2.0 - Is a more advanced and up to date version of the Internet. This type of web allows the interaction with individual users on websites. For example wikipedia and other things like interactable encyclopedias and dictionaries allows for anyone to edit the articles on it. Blog websites also fall into this category as well as social networking sites. This type of Internet also allows the use of advanced gaming.

Web 3.0 - This is the newest and most advanced version of the web. It allows for a lot more personalization and has more "intelligent" searches meaning that searches will be closer to what you asked for. Web 3.0 will improve search engines a great deal however this type of web has not yet been transitioned to most websites.

Magazine Analysis - Audiences and Institutions

NME
The NME is a popular music magazine that has been around for decades. Since its first release the magazine has had to adapt and change over the years to keep and gain audiences. One way in which it has done this in recent years is the use of more technologies to promote and display the magazine. As well as having a magazine, NME also has a website. This website may not offer as much detail in the stories as the magazine however it does offer things like videos, photo galleries and ticket sales. These features will attract a wider audience and will attract more people to the actual magazine. Another thing which can be seen on the website are the advertisements for things like festivals and available tickets to buy. Another very important feature in my opinion of the website is that the public can comment on it. With people being able to comment on the website and ask questions it allows for a wider audience and gets people more involved which will most likely keep them interested in the magazine. In my opinion if the NME never had the website then its readership would significantly lower than it is now. This suggests that technological convergence is very important for media institutions as they need to keep a large readership and audience and offer something appealing and different than rivals.

Magazine Homework Task

The NME has both a printed magazine on sale and a website to go with it. The magazine offers a great deal of information about many different music artists, has posters and several interviews with stars. The website for NME also has lots of information, interviews and it has a large section where tickets to many different concerts can be bought. The website also lets readers comment on stories and input what they think to the story. The website also offers readers a chance to listen to new music that has recently been released. Although the website probably offers more to readers like a music player and options to buy tickets to concerts, the magazine probably offers much more detail in the stories. This is probably because the magazine needs to offer readers something different to what the website offers or sales would be much lower. Magazines are sometimes more popular because the buyers can read it anywhere they like, for example on a journey and don't need a computer.

Spooks - ethnicity representation

How is ethnicity represented in this extract?

This extract represents ethnicity in two very different ways in my opinion. The first is suppose to make the viewers feel hatred and anger at the terrorists featured in the clip. The terrorist group leader kidnapps 2 of the characters, killing one of them, and then in the extract we see him pour fuel over the remaining female captive. We also see him telling the woman that her children will be able to watch a video of her being burned on the internet when they are older. This is showing the viewers that this man does not care who he hurts or kills to get what he wants and making the viewers feel anger towards him. This character is portrayed in a very negative way and makes the viewers feel dislike and anger towards him. However the female terrorist is represented in a very different way. In the clip we see that she has a bomb inside her. At first the viewers would probably think she is a bad character however we see that she has basically been forced to do this attack. It is revealed that this character has had her whole family killed by the British/American army in the war. In the clip we see her say that she doesn't want to do this and starts crying. Eventually she hands over the detonator and tells the MI5 officer where the captive is being held. This character makes the viewers feel very differently to how the other terrorist did. We are made to feel empathy towards her and feel sorry for what has happened to her. It also suggests that not all terrorists are how we would stereotypically expect.

Gender Representation

Gender representation is important in any form of advertisement. The male gender is usually portrayed as tough, brave and muscular. This applies in many advertisments as the company selling the products will want their models or the people featured in the advert to attract the viewers to them and their product. This will also apply to the female gender who are usually portrayed in adverts as attractive and elegant, which will again attract the viewers to the advert and take more notice in the product. Things like phones, ipods, laptops and other gadgets are mainly aimed at the male population as they are portrayed as more "gadget savy" than females. However things like beauty products and things like that would be aimed at the female population. This means that adverts have to attract and appeal to their target audiences if they are wanting to make a successful advert and sell their products.

Magazine History Research

NME

The NME music magazine is one of the most popular and oldest surviving magazines to date. The magazine started off quite slow as other magazines like "Sound" were selling much more copies. However with the introduction of new journalists and a wider range of articles the NME eventually sold much more copies worldwide and survives to the current day unlike its many rivals who folded many years ago. NME adapted by giving its readers more articles, artists and genres of music throughout the years and was written in a way unlike any other magazine. This was the main reason NME remained so popular throughout the years, giving what its readers wanted and offering the widest variety of music articles. Ownership affected the NME alot since the begining. At first NME was not as popular as other leading magazines at that time, however when new people were brought in it eventualy became very popular. Many different articles and information was put in the magazines, however years after the introduction of the NME, the ownership was changed and so was the style of the magazine. The magazine in this ownership became all and only about music whereas before articles covered such things as everday events, politics and news. The writers and journalistic styles were also very important to the NME. The way in which the stories were covered and the way that the articles were wrote were one of the main reasons why NME was so successful and popular. For example at one point an NME edition was devoted to teenage suicide. although it didnt sell very many copies, it was things like these and how they were written which allowed NME to become so successful.

This is my questionnaire that I created for my music magazine. The questions I included in this questionnaire would give me an idea on what people would like to see in a magazine. Many of the people who I asked to complete a questionnaire for me wrote that they liked Rock, Alternative Rock or Rap music. This then helped me to decide what type of bands and artists to put in my magazine, most of which were Rock and Alternative Rock artists. Also Nearly all the people who filled in my questionnaire wrote that they were more attracted to the artist on the front of the cover than the actual magazine name. This therefore led me to making the photo on the cover much larger and eye-catching than the title and anything else on the front cover.

Photo Shoot

For this photo we wanted a group photo for us to appear as a boy band. We used lighting in front of us, brightening our faces and showing our shadows behind us on the white background. We also stood in different positions and looked in different directions making the picture a bit more noticable. 

Music Magazine Photo Shoot

For our photo shoot, we have used several different filters and techniques. We have used props including drum sticks, hats and a guitar to make us look like music artists. The filters gave our pictures different backgrounds and effects including blue and pink. Also for some of our pictures we had only one person in it and for others we used a group of people to make it look like a band. We also took our photos from many different angles and sizes like low angled shots and close up shots. From these many different techniques and styles that we have used, we have gained many interesting and useful photos that we can use in our Music Magazines.

College Magazine

Evaluation

I think that my college magazine cover is quite eye catching as it has a large curving title at the top of the page consisting of white text and a black shadow. The black shadow gives the title a bit more depth which makes it stand out slightly more. The rest of the text on the page consists of blues and purples which stand out and are easy to read on the grayish background. The picture at the bottom of the cover is large and takes up pretty much the bottom half of the page which again would attract attention to the page. For the contents page I decided to use a picture to fill the whole of the page. I chose this picture because I wanted to then put the actual contents in the middle of the circle of people. The title i chose to have red as it stands out against the background. I also kept the same shape curvy pattern for the contents title like the front cover title to keep consistency in my magazine. The text on my contents page is also red for consistency on the page and I chose to put this text on a black background. This was because it is easier to read the text like this.

Although I am quite pleased with my final magazine, there would be several things that I would change. Firstly I would add more pictures and text to both the front cover and contents pages. This is because at the moment the pages look quite simple and would be better if there were more pictures and text for readers. I would also make the layout slightly different on the front cover by not having the text in just straight lines down the sides. I would add more text captions around this page to offer more to the readers. The contents page doesn't have much on it so I would have added more pictures around the side matching what the actual contents text says. I would maybe change the background on the front cover to something a bit more colourful as this would make it more attractive and eye catching.

For this photo we took the picture at an angle where the long path is directly in sight.which gives a lot of depth to the picture. The photo is also bordered by trees giving a nice green frame.

On this photo we angled the camera just below the flower, right next to it. This therefore made the flower look much bigger than the church in the background. Also for this photo we have used the depth of field, focusing on the flowers rather than the large church in the background.

Rap

Tinie Tempah and Professor Green are both solo artists who belong to the genre of rap. Unlike most other rap singers, the lyrics are not generally very fast or do not contain excessive amounts of swearing. These two artists are both very successful in the UK charts. Also both artists usually sing songs with other famous people which may help sell their albums. 

N Dubz are also rap artists in the form of a band. Much like Professor Green and Tinie Tempah, N Dubz have had many songs in the UK charts that have been very successful. The members of N Dubz do fit the image of rappers, usually wearing caps, tracksuits and hats and many of their songs are about their own lives which again you would associate with other rappers.

Professor Green

Professor Green is a male rapper from England. Some of his songs include "I Need You Tonight", "Just be Good to Green" and "Monster". He is usually presented wearing a shirt along with jeans and sometimes a cap making him look smart even though a rapper is usually portrayed as wearing hoodies and baggy clothes. This makes him stand out from other rappers making people notice him more. His tatoos on his neck are usually always in sight on photos and during performances as it is part of his image and again it makes him differ from other artists.
